Words & readings
Of “At The Margins” (as Mary Sara):
The poet is sharing insights, not soul baring or axe grinding. Not wasting words but reinventing meanings, these are poems to return to again and again.
Of her writing:
The voice of her poetry is a voice of special quality, capable of precision and suggestion, of empathy and detachment, of spare economy and subtle colour. Nothing will jar on the inner ear. The tones and rhythms may vary but they are always musical.
What the poet says
My poems are the shaping of words into a form which satisfies me and expresses ideas that linger after an event, ideas which often only emerge during the writing. The events are elemental ones which touch me to the core; moments in front of Nature, in the landscape, or personal griefs, fears, joys and flashes of recognition. Almost always I begin with an image. Once I drew, now I take photographs and sometimes use them to illuminate my words.
Readings
Mary Thomson is enthusiastically received as a reader of her own work and is happy to give readings to groups large or small. A CD of her reading from the collection Heartwood is available for organisers who may wish to make a booking. She will also come to your home and read to you and your friends as a fund-raiser for your favourite charity.
